So please, for the love of Christ, call it what it is. A tattoo.
Thank you.
-----EDIT----
~OldSchoolFresh brought up a good point. A tattoo machine should never, ever, EVER, be referred to as a 'gun.' It has no mechanical or visual relation to a 'gun.' Technically, it has more to do with a doorbell.
Any respectable, reputable artist will smack you ass backwards if you utter 'tat' or 'gun' in their shop. Word for the wise, just don't do it.

"I guess he picked a knife fight with somebody better?"
I'm just kidding. I appreciate the wanting to remove certain slang or abbreviation to something that warrants more artistic respect in communities.
I actually enjoy just referring to it as "ink" in general. As in, seeing someone with a great tattoo and telling him/her: "That's some great ink you've got there."
But then again, I'm a dork like that.

BK Productions- "I'm not crazy, I just draw that way."
I once had my ass chewed out by a well known tattoo artist for referring to a tattoo machine as a "gun" - and I took that lesson to heart too.
A pencil is not a "stick", a machine is not a "gun" and a tattoo is not a "tat".
